About Christian

Christian is a graduate of the Master of Directing for Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts (University of Melbourne). He is based somewhere between Geelong and Melbourne; working across Wadawurrung and Wurundjeri land, making the most of opportunities across metro and regional Victoria.

Since 2019, his production company Bravo Arts, presented THE MENTOR by Joshua White, H#SH’D OUT by Kurt Kansley and Oliver Lidert and THE EIGHT: REINDEER MONOLOGUES by Jeff Goode. The company also won the Fast Track Award at QPAS in 2022 for new work in development, WOOLF by Patrick Livesey, Created by Christian Cavallo and Dan Graham.

Christian was a co-artistic director of Hope New Works, a company dedicated to sustainable development of new Australian music theatre. The platform was awarded two Green Room Association Awards in 2020 for Community Building and Advocacy and Contribution to Development of New Work.

From 2020-2022, he was Resident director at Class Act Theatre, collaborating on touring shows for education in schools. The shows included explore themes of respectful relationships, online safety, gender and adolescence, and mental health.

Christian freelances as a teacher and lecturer at Patrick School of the Arts and JMC Academy, and has previously taught at the National Theatre Drama School, Oxygen College, Australian Institute of Music, Stage School Australia amongst others. He has directed Tertiary productions of OUR TOWN, ANIMAL FARM, THE TEMPEST and THE PINEAPPLE WAR.

Directing credits include GREASE, IF WE GOT SOME MORE COCAINE…, KINKY BOOTS, DUSTY THE ORIGINAL POP DIVA, MIKADO ON THE ROCKS, HEATHERS THE MUSICAL (GEA Award, Best Director), THE ADDAMS FAMILY MUSICAL, EUROBEAT: ALMOST EUROVISION. He has worked as Assistant Director on NEXT TO NORMAL and Australian Premieres of [TITLE OF SHOW] and DREAMGIRLS

While at VCA, Christian collaborated with an international cohort to present AMOK>>>>HALT in Vietnam at the Asia-Pacific Bond Theatre in Schools Program. Professional secondments included EVITA, CAKE DADDY, MURIEL’S WEDDING, BARNAM: THE CIRCUS MUSICAL, IL VIAGGIO A REIMS and COME FROM AWAY.

A proud Italian-Australian with strong working relationships through regional and metro Victoria, Christian has worked extensively with community groups and maintains an awareness of methodologies that incorporate learning and development opportunities through arts practice. He seeks out works with contemporary and socially relevant themes that add voice to socio-political and cultural issues such as inclusion and acceptance of minorities, queer people and culture; awareness around bullying and abuse; and mental health related issues.​

Christian worked at Universal Studios Japan (USJ) as an inaugural cast member of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The experience inspired the cabaret BOY WIZARD. In Japan he also performed at other USJ Special Events, and was a headliner at Osaka’s Hard Rock Cafe. On stage, Christian has many credits across musical theatre, concerts and cabaret. He performed in IT’S ONLY LIFE with John Bucchino at Chapel off Chapel Melbourne and Birdland in New York. His last performance was in KING OF COOL: THE SONGS OF DEAN MARTIN.

Christian also works as a freelance graphic designer through Cav Creative, specialising in entertainment advertising design.
